Mowing Native Grass in Colorado

Mowing Native Grasses
in Denver, Colorado

Horizon Landscaping provides mowing of native grasses and fields in Denver and throughout Colorado. While mowing of native grasses and fields is not needed as frequently as traditional grasses, in order to maintain a beautiful looking property, cutting the grass is still needed from time to time. Let Horizon Landscaping take care of mowing your native grass and fields on your property to keep it looking its best.

Increased Use of Native Grasses and Fields in Colorado

In an effort to reduce the management of grass, businesses and HOAs in the Denver Metro and surrounding areas often consider the replacement of mowed, irrigated turf (bluegrass, fescues) with grass species that should require less maintenance (less/no water, infrequent mowing, no fertilizer, few pesticides). These areas are often referred to as “native grass” areas because their un-mowed (or less frequently mowed) appearance sometimes looks like that of an unmanaged, native prairie. High altitude grasses such as Indian Rice, Mountain Brome, Blue Gama Grass, Blue wild rye, Wheatgrasses, Arizona Fescue, Junegrass, Mountain Muhly, Little Bluestem, and Wester Wheatgrass grow natively throughout Colorado.

Why Cut Your Native Grasses?

The impact and management of these low maintenance/”native” areas can be a point of contention within HOA communities – especially for those who live adjacent to them and are most affected by their appearance and other potential impacts. Besides making your property look better, there are a variety of other reasons why you should mow these areas, including:

  • Avoid fines. Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, and many other cities in Colorado have ordinances requiring regular maintenance (cutting) of grass on private property.

  • Native grasses are weedy and can invade lawns and gardens.

  • Tall grass attracts unwanted wildlife (snakes, rodents, predators).

  • Provide safe access to water wells and other places on your property.

  • Native areas turn dormant during dry weather, becoming a fire hazard.

If you are unsure about what height you need to cut your grass, a good rule of thumb is that grass and weeds cannot exceed a height of six inches on residential or commercial property; however, you can look it up with your local government's website.
